While earning his undergraduate degree in journalism with an emphasis in photojournalism at California State University in Fresno, James Kenney worked for the Hartford (Calif.) Sentinel. He went to London in his last semester and stayed there to freelance for United Press International. When he returned to the United States, he worked seven years for newspapers in Reno and Las Vegas, Nev. He did freelance work for New York Newsday, the San Diego Union Tribune, the Associated Press, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, The Boston Globe, the Sacramento Bee and The Farm Journal.

Now associate professor and director of the photojournalism program at Western Kentucky University, he has spent summers in various activities, including a 10-week faculty fellowship at National Geographic magazine; a visual workshop at the Poynter Institute; two trips to Asia, photographing China, Thailand and Vietnam; a recent trip to Nigeria; and a faculty fellowship at the Lexington Herald-Leader.
