Nina Griepel is originally from Bochum, Germany. Her family moved to Kentucky in 1994 to start a new life. “Why Kentucky?” you might ask. “What’s so special about Kentucky?” Her parents had the bold idea to open a German restaurant in Louisville, a location rich with German heritage, yet no good German restaurant. Now, nearly sixteen years later the restaurant is still running. But more on that later. She graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2004 and had internships at the Midland Daily News, The State-Journal Register, The Oregonian and The Courier-Journal. Her first staff position, shortly after graduation, was at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in sunny Southwest Florida. But due to budget cuts in 2007, she was laid off and moved back home and to her family in Louisville, Ky., where she has been working as a wedding and event photographer. While she primarily loves to shoot weddings she also freelances for various newspapers including The Courier-Journal and USA Today. When she’s not shooting, you might find her baking. She works in Louisville alongside her parents in the aforementioned restaurant, The Gasthaus and really enjoys her “second career” after newspapers. Sometimes, she photographs the food and upload the pictures to their blog, fittingly called “Got ‘kraut”. It supplements the website, for which she also provided the photos, with more updated information. She loves being able to juggle both - photography and the restaurant. She’s honored to be part of the Workshops again this year. This will be her third consecutive year as a staff member. She has labbied three Mountain Workshops and attended the Cave City and Bardstown Workshops. She looks forward to being inspired by everyone’s talent.
